Hyundai Motor Company Introduces IONIQ Electric Self-Driving Car at LA Auto Show

Hyundai Motor Company introduced IONIQ electric self-driving car that is at level 4 stage, which indicates level of complete self-driving car, for the first time.

Hyundai Motor Company introduced IONIQ electric self-driving car at LA Auto Show on the 16th (U.S. time).

IONIQ electric self-driving car is a complete self-driving concept car that is based on self-driving car and it meets level 4, which indicates level of complete self-driving car, from SAE’s (Society of Automotive Engineers) levels on self-driving technology.

IONIQ electric self-driving car is developed with a purpose of implementing self-driving technology as simple as possible. Hyundai Motor Company combined LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology with frontal ASCC (Advanced Smart Cruise Control) radar, which can be easily seen with current cars, and LKAS (Lane Keeping Assist System) camera. One will be able to safely drive IONIQ electric self-driving car because it can detect accurate location of cars and surrounding cars and objects with LIDAR system and other technologies that are equipped with this car.

LIDAR, which is located at the front of a car, is linked to GPS and figures out accurate location of a car and calculates route of a car along with ASCC radar. Three cameras that are located at the front of a car detect distances of a car from pedestrians and lanes and signals.

Hyundai MNSoft’s high-quality map sends degree of accuracy of location, slope of streets, curvature of streets, width of lanes, and data on direction. ABSD (Active Blind Spot Detection) sends accurate information in order to have cars safely change their lanes.

“It will be difficult to realize any difference in appearance between IONIQ electric self-driving car and current IONIQ electric cars because we have developed IONIQ with self-driving technology in mind ever since the beginning stage of development and design .” said Vice-President Mike O’Brien of Hyundai Motor Company’s U.S. Corporate. 

On the other hand, Hyundai Motor Company introduced Genesis G80 Sports at a separate booth for the first time on the same day while Kia Motors introduced ‘Soul Turbo’ that is equipped with 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and 1.6 Turbo Engine that has 204 horsepower.
