  • The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) declared Invention Week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Korea’s Invention Day (May 19). Throughout the entire week, numerous invention-related events will be held under the slogan “50 years of Korean inventions and creativity” to help raise public awareness of the importance of inventors and their contributions to society. Invention Day—which celebrates the invention of the world’s first rain gauge on May 19, 1441, during the reign of King Sejong—became an official holiday in 1957. This year, it falls on the final day of Invention Week, which will be held from May 12 to 19. Each day of Invention Week has been given a different theme: “Protecting Inventions for Win-Win Growth” (May 12), “Inventions and the Protection Thereof” (May 13), “Inventions and the Youth” (May 14), “Inventions and Women” (May 15), “Inventions and Commercialization” (May 18), and “Inventions and Festivals” (May 19). The main event for Invention Week will be the “Campus Festival for Shipbuilding Inventions and Patents” on May 14 and 15 at Busan’s Pukyong National University. Festivities will be held with the participation of university students nationwide and will include invention and patent classes, the Patent Golden Bell, and a shipbuilding technology exhibition. The award ceremony for the “Patent Specifications Preparation Contest,” which began last March, will take place during the festival, as well. The “Korea International Women’s Invention Exposition” and the “Korea Women’s Invention Fair” will be held from May 15 to 18 at the Seoul aT Center as showcases for various new products invented by women. Discussions will also then be held at the “International Women’s Invention Forum,” under the theme “roles of the public and private sectors in bolstering inventions by women.” The “Intellectual Property and Value Creation International Conference,” to be held on May 18 at Seoul’s Imperial Palace Hotel, will kick off with a keynote speech from John Sandage, Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), followed by presentations given by various IP experts from all over the world: Korea, Europe, the United States, Japan, Germany, etc. These experts will share case studies on value creation through the utilization of IP.

Last but not least, the “The 50th Anniversary Ceremony for Korea Invention Day” will be held on May 19 at the COEX in Seoul. During the ceremony, prizes will be awarded to the “Invention King of the Year,” as well as others whose efforts have helped foster creativity and innovation within Korea. * For details, refer to Attachment 1 .

KIPO also plans to celebrate May as Invention Month by holding an invention contest, a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the the Youth Invention Press Corps, a conference on patent searches, and other events throughout the country, all of which will be open to the general public.

“It is my fervent hope that these events will demonstrate to the public the importance of inventions in everyday life, as well as inspire them to join in the effort to realize a Korean creative economy,” said KIPO Commissioner Choi Donggyou.
